People: Why Doesn’t God Speak? Prophet: Why Aren’t You Listening?
We’ve all been there, in a room where someone asks a question in a way that reveals the answer they are willing to hear. The people who returned from Babylonian exile want to know why God doesn’t take notice of their prayers and worship. Isaiah points out that God has indeed noticed every detail of what they are doing – and what they are not doing. The prophet says God doesn’t need them to do anything for God. Rather God desires them to live their faith in service to others rather than in self-serving acts of piety while looking down on others.
